25 March 2016, Winter Ladder 2015/16 Results

This years winner of the Winter Ladder is Keith Gibbs, who continued his winning streak from last year. The leading Lady was Jane Cooper who managed to get almost as many points as those who regularly played in Division 1. Father and son Terry and Chris Fernyhough came joint second, and an honorable mention goes to Yvonne Taylor who was the only person, other than those already mentioned, to not miss a week's play. Thank you to Robbie and Nerys for organising the events, and to all those who took part or substituted, sometimes in less than ideal weather conditions.

11 October 2015, Grand Day at Mixed Doubles Club Championship

This year's mixed doubles championship, held during the afternoon of 11th October, was a resounding success with twenty eight members taking part. In order to fit the tournament into a single afternoon, matches of a fixed number of games were played in the group stage and semi-final with a single set for the final, which still needed floodlights to complete it. In the final Alex Asklov and Judy Tierney beat Keith Gibbs and Hilary Tarpey 6:2, with Hilary being delighted to reach the final for the first time. Members enjoyed a buffet whilst watching the semi-finals and final - thank you to all the members who brought along food. The weather was very kind for October and a grand day was had by all.

17 January 2015, Winter Tennis Lament

Or Why I did not get to play today - A poem by Barbara Stoddart:

Because the court was icy
A lob or smash or slicey
Would make the prospect dicey
A fracture would be pricey!

I didn’t want to risk it
Though not inclined to miss it
Although it would be grand there
I didn’t want to stand there.

A slip upon the grass
Might mean an injured ass-et.
So to put it more concisely
I hope your play went nicely!

03 October 2014, Championship Winners

20 July 2012, Sport England Funding

The club has been awarded a £50,000 grant from Sport England's Inspired Facilities fund towards the cost of replacing the surface and substructure of courts 1 and 2.

We have appointed LTA recommended consultants Labosport to advise on the work and will be asking companies to tender for the job very shortly. We are aiming to be in a position to start work sometime in September and to be using the courts sometime in October. The work is expected to take about five weeks (though this may depend on the contractor chosen), during which time, we will be only be able to use courts 3 and 4, and as there will be machinery around, access to the courts and club house might be slightly more circuitous than it is normally. The replacement will see an end to the uneven surface and consequent puddling on courts 1 and 2, and the carpet surface is likely to be similar to that on the other two courts. Obviously there will be some inconvenience during the work, but the short-term pain should be well worthwhile when we have the new courts in use.

A big thank you must go to the court replacement sub-committee, headed by Hugh Padley, with assistance from Frank Elson, Mark Hagan, Roger Smith and Ian Tarpey, who put a lot of effort into the ensuring the bid had the best possible chance of success.

The Inspired Facilities fund is part of the Places People Play, Sport England's Olympic and Paralympic legacy fund which aims to bring the inspiration of the London 2012 Games to every community in England. Our club, by receiving Inspired Facilities funding will now have the Inspire mark, celebrating the link to the London Olympic Games.

Further information about Sport England and the Inspired Facilities fund can be found at www.sportengland.org and inspiredfacilities.sportengland.org.

08 September 2008, Ellis At Road To Wimbledon

Amy Ellis played in the 14 and under finals of the HSBC Road To Wimbledon competition for the second year running in August after winning the Staffordshire qualifying competition. She arrived on the Sunday to practice before the competition started the following day. In the round robin first round, she was unlucky not to progress to the main draw after being one of three players of four to win two matches but lost out on game count back. In the knockout consolation draw, Amy won her first two matches in straight sets and then the quarter final from a set down. The semi final was really tense; with Amy coming back from a set and 1-4 down to win eleven straight games and the match. Amy was more relaxed for the final, winning in straight sets before rushing off to join a coaching clinic with Tim Henman.

The emphasis of the organisers is to give the players an unforgettable experience. Amy's matches were played on the Aroangi practice courts and indoor courts at Wimbledon. Players and supporters were able to walk round the courts and grounds. Competitors used the players' changing rooms and were given a pass to use for lunch in the cafe. Amy enjoyed the true Wimbledon experience of waiting for courts to become available after rain breaks and playing with the ground staff at court side, waiting to rush on and also the pressure of knowing a loss meant a trip home - she was determined to keep winning though as she was enjoying being there so much. This visit Amy was lucky to play six out of the eight singles matches on grass and is proud to say that over the two visits she has not lost a singles match on grass at Wimbledon. Amy was thrilled to have her trophy presented by Tim.

Amy warmed up for the competition by winning her first two grade 3 tournaments, at the Giffnock Open in Glasgow and the West Cheshire Tournament, helpfully on grass, and also getting to another final at Wigan. There was no break after Wimbledon either, as the Staffs County Closed was the following week. Amy continued her good form there, being runner up in the under 14 singles, third in the under 16 singles and winning the under 14 girls' doubles.

After a hard fought 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 victory over fellow Staffs player Grace Baker, she won 6-2, 7-5 in her last 16 match and followed it up with a 6-4, 7-5 victory in the quarterfinals using some impressive serve volley tactics. In the semis she faced the number 1 seed and battled hard before losing 7-6, 6-1. She also reached the last 16 of the 16 and under draw along with fellow Basford player Hannah Parker. Jack Eagles, put up a good performance, but in the end lost 6-4, 6-4 to a player 2 ratings above him. Ryan Maughan had a similar tough task, playing a player ranked 138 in his age group - he eventually lost 6-2, 6-4. Chris Riley and John Thornhill lost an up and down doubles match 6-1, 0-6, 10-3 to leave Basford 3-0 down at the half way point. John Thornhill made it 3-1 with a tidy 6-3, 6-1 win at number 4 and Chris Riley battled back from a set down to win 3-6, 6-3, 10-7, but Eagles and Maughan lost out 6-3, 6-1 in the doubles. All in all it was a good display, especially given the size of the Stourbridge club (16 courts and 1000 members). The boys next travel to Albert Lawn Tennis Club, Wolverhampton on the 8th of March, while the Boys 16 & Under team kick off their campaign on the 16th of March at Basford.
