The aim of the Saturday Morning Group Arranged Play is to provide a couple of hours of tennis between 9.00 and 11.00 on Saturday mornings with no waiting time between or before games. To facilitate this, the players for each week are arranged beforehand; turn-up and play is not available. Players must arrive promptly at 9 o'clock and be available to play until 11 unless replaced by another player part way through the session.
In order to ensure an even number of players, players are listed in the order they signed up to the event. If there is an odd number of players, or more than 12 players have signed up, then the last signed up player(s) must attempt to get another player to make up an even number of 12 or less, turn up after 10.15 to mix in after the first two sets, or withdraw from the event.

As well as general garden and court maintenance we will be cutting back bushes and trees around the clubhouse, removing moss from the roof and clearing the gutters to reduce dampness around the building. The Winter Ladder will commence on Wednesday, 4th October. For those who have not played in this before, it offers friendly competitive doubles play on Wednesday evenings from the beginning of October to the end of March. Players need to be able to play fortnightly on Wednesday evenings, but can use a substitute player to cover occasional unavailability.
The ladder is mixed sex and is open to Senior, Intermediate, Country and Young Adult members of the club.Each division plays fortnightly, weather permitting.There is an entry fee of £1.50 per person per round, which covers the cost of lighting and must be paid before playing.Rubbers are played on the courts and at the times specified on the match sheet. Players are responsible for checking what time and which court has been allocated for their rubber.Each rubber consists of three one-set doubles matches, with each player in a division playing one match with each of the other players in the division as a partner.Each match is played as a first to 6 set with a tie-break at 5-5 and traditional deuce/advantage points.Each player adds together the games he or she won in the three matches. The player winning the most games is promoted to a higher division. The player winning the fewest games is demoted to a lower division.If there is a tie, the promotion or demotion is decided by lottery.If a player cannot play one week, he or she may nominate a substitute player. Substituted players cannot be promoted, but can stay in the division or be demoted. Substitute players should be chosen from the list of substitutes, providing one is available. If another Winter Ladder player needs to be used as a substitute, the substitute should not be playing in a division more than three divisions higher than the player being replaced.If a player fails to turn up for play, he or she will be demoted.A leader board is used to show how many points each player has obtained throughout the season. The overall winner is the person with the most points at the end of the season. In the event of a tie, appearances are taken into account.
Start times will depend on how many members sign up to play.
Players are encouraged to use the bar and lounge facilities after play has completed.

The grounds at Basford are looking very good, thanks to the kindness of a few members taking time to look after an area of the grounds, but there are still several areas of the grounds and the courts themselves that require some maintenance.
To ensure the club is looking its best for Captains' and President's Day the following week, we will be holding a working party on Saturday 24th June from 10.00. Please bring any hand tools you feel would be useful, but do not bring any electrical equipment. For those members playing in the SMG, please start as normal at 9.00am, but for a period after 10.00 please spend a short period of time assisting others to rid the courts of weeds before re-commencing your games.
Many of us simply play tennis at the club, many for the clubs various teams, therefore the committee asks for as many members as possible to support the request to join the working party on the 24th as “we all” benefit from the high standard of the clubs grounds and facilities.

Set in America’s Wild West can you solve the murder or make a fortune on a gold claim. This is an interactive evening where guests take on roles assigned to them and have objectives to achieve. I’m not very well tonight so Steve Crofts has agreed to sub for Nicci Smith in Div5 and to organise tonight’s event…thanks Steve.
With a couple of key players missing tonight I am going to jiggle a couple of players around to ensure that each division is competitive. I will write the players playing in each division on the paper sheet in the clubhouse. Keith is going to move back up to Div1 and Steve Crofts is going to move up into Div2 to fill that gap. Andy Maughan will then take the place in Div3 left by Steve C moving up. Russell Ashworth has agreed to replace Steve Gutsell in Div2 in 2 weeks time and I will this week be making up the numbers in Div2.
Courts 3&4 are now playable and so we'll see the Div 4&5 players later this evening.
The weather forecast for tomorrow is saying that it might rain at 8pm tomorrow night and so if any of the divisions want to organise amongst yourselves to start earlier, please feel free to do so. Make sure that you have a court booked.

The Winter Ladder will commence on Wednesday, 5th October. For those who have not played in this before, it offers friendly competitive doubles play on Wednesday evenings from the beginning of October to the end of March. Players need to be able to play fortnightly on Wednesday evenings, but can use a substitute player to cover occasional unavailability.
Players are encouraged to use the refurbished bar and lounge facilities after play has completed.

The summer ladder is a ladder of doubles play similar to the winter ladder, except that matches are not played at a set time and each match will consist of 3 short sets (first to 4 with a 2 game lead and a 4-4 tiebreak) to try to ensure that a warm-up and 3 sets can be completed in the 115 minutes of two adjacent slots on court 1 or 2. Matches will be played at a time agreed by the four competitors, who will need to book two adjacent slots (or started in one slot and finished later on) and they will have two weeks to complete their match. If you would like to join in the ladder, you can either sign up to this event or contact Mike Baggaley.

Adam and Josh will be hosting a charity quiz night in the clubhouse on Saturday 22nd February at 7pm to raise money for Cancer Research UK, which will be a charity close to so many of you.

On Saturday 13th April between 9 and 12, we will be having a working party with the objectives of painting the wall by court 1, painting the gents changing room outer door and frame, strimming the grass and bushes around court 1 and reviewing the work needed to fix the gatepost by Mike’s shed. There will be no SMG that day, and play will not be available on court 1 while the work is in progress.

Saturday November 10th will be a working party day, with the objectives being to tidy the grounds, clear timber from pruned/felled trees (Dave E will organise the tree surgery), repair & paint the men's changing room door and frame, re-stain wooden benches, fix dripping guttering in front of changing rooms, replace tap washers in ladies sink, repaint lines on the edges of steps. Helpers will be arriving from 9.00 onwards. Please do your best to help out for a couple of hours. If you cannot make this day, please feel free to undertake one of the jobs on a day of your choice. Members are cordially invited to the Captains’ and President’s Mixed Doubles Club Championships at 1 p.m. on Sunday 23 July. The event is open to all adult and intermediate club members. There is no entry fee, but please bring a plate of food for the buffet which will be served in the late afternoon/early evening. The bar will be open, serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. This is the main opportunity of the year for team and social players to play together and as the club has fewer female members, we would especially like to encourage as many ladies as possible to join in what we expect to be a hotly contested and enjoyable afternoon. Partners will be arranged on the day, so there is no need to enter as pairs. All current and past club members and their families are invited to a celebration of the club's 90th anniversary of residence at the current premises. It will take place from 1.00 on Sunday 22nd May. There will be a variety of fun and games, both on and off court with different activities on each court and a quiz. The club is holding a fun day organised by Adam Fenton, Dean Eagles, Jack Eagles and Lois Connell on Sunday 12th April. There will be a junior/senior team tournament, doubles tournament, quiz to complete between games and plenty of fun. Juniors, seniors and guests are all welcome. The cost is £6 per person, with the proceeds going to the organisers’ friend Sue Callaghan who has queued in the Wimbledon Queue every year for the past 40 years. Due to poor health and being unable to work in the last year or two Sue told them that she will not be attending Wimbledon this year because she cannot afford to, for the first time in decades. Adam and the others want to help her to get to Wimbledon this year.Play starts at 1.30 and will last until about 4.00. The Winter Ladder returns this year after missing out last year due to the court refurbishment. It is due to commence on the first Wednesday in October. If you would like to play, please sign up on the list in the club house entrance hall. Whilst it is accepted that players will not be able to make every match, please only sign up if you are able to play most matches in the ladder throughout the autumn & winter. Matches will normally be fortnightly at 6.30 or 8.00pm.
The men's doubles championship 2013 will take place on Sunday September 29th at 1.30. If you would like to play, please sign up on the list on the noticeboard in the clubhouse entrance by Friday September 27th. Team players will be seeded and partners will be drawn randomly. Please arrive by 1.00 on the day to allow for a prompt start at 1.30.

Members are invited to join this years Basford Cup at 2pm on Sunday 22nd April.
Players will be split into 2 teams. The captain of each team will put their player in pairs without knowing the opposing teams order. Matches are timed and at the end of time, the winning team wins a point for their team. If the match is drawn, the points are shared, ½ point each.
At the end of play the team with the most points wins (for those who play golf, the principle is very similar to the Ryder Cup).
Please bring a plate of food, either savoury or sweet. A notice will be placed in the entrance foyer at the club so that you can indicate which you are providing.

Chris Ferneyhough will be hosting a Quiz Night on Saturday, 12th November starting at 8:00pm (please arrive by 7:45). The cost is £5 per person and will include a full Buffet. This is a social team event where teams first earn points through tennis matches followed by multiple choice tennis questions for extra points. Please bring a plate of food, either savoury or sweet, indicating on the notice in the entrance to the club house which you intend to bring. Tennis whites are preferred. The entrance fee is £3.00 for members, £8.00 for non members.
A quiz night will be held in the club house on Saturday, 21st May with Dave Winter setting the questions.
There will be a Tennis Mastermind Tournament on Sunday May 15th starting at 2 o'clock. Details to follow.

The Club will be hosting a quiz night on Saturday, 4th December in the club house. The entry fee will be £5 per person and a full buffet will be included in this price. There will be top prizes for the first three teams and more importantly the bar will be open. Kick-off is 7.45 p.m.

Ladies singles will take place on Thursday 9th September with Ladies doubles being played on the 16th. There will be a social night on from 6.30 onwards on Wednesday 31st March 2010. It's open to all members and will be a 'mix in' evening of tennis, followed by a buffet. The bar will also be open. The night is also an opportunity to invite non-members along, which will hopefully encourage them to join for the new season. The cost is £1.50 for a member, £5.00 for a non-member. To assist with catering, please indicate your attendance on the 'tick sheet' displayed in the clubhouse.
On Saturday, 27th February at 7 p.m. at Knights' offices in the Brampton, Tony Bell will be giving a talk and slide show on his three and a half week Annapurna Circuit trek in the Himalayas (climbing from 2,700 feet over the highest pass in the world at 17,769 feet and then circling back down the deepest valley in the world at 18,000 feet in depth) with no cars, papers, televisions, or telephones - and more often than not no electricity - to spoil the most magnificent ever changing scenery in the company of the ever smiling and hospitable Nepalese people. The cost is £3.00 for nibbles, cakes and the like, with liquid refreshments available to buy on the evening: wine, soft drinks, tea and coffee. Proceeds will go towards the resurfacing of courts 1 and 2.

Played on the evening of Halloween, with players in fancy dress. Prizes will be awarded to the winners and best dressed. Play starts at 6.00 p.m. on Saturday, October 31st.
There will be a Quiz Night at 8.00 on Saturday 10th October hosted by Chris Fernyhough (please arrive by 7.45 to allow for a prompt start). The entrance fee is £5 per person which includes a buffet; the bar will be open for drinks. The event is also open to non-members. You can organise a team of up to six players in advance or join one on the night. There will be prizes for the top three teams. Put your name or team down on the form on the noticeboard if you would like to play.
On Sunday October 4th there will be a rerun of the Members' Day event that was held on 26th July but rained off after an hour. Those who took part enjoyed the format and requested that it be repeated. Register at 12.30pm with fun competitions starting at 1.00pm.
Back this year after being missed last year, knock out rounds will take place in the preceding weeks, with the finals played on Sunday, September 20th.
This year's Member's Day will be a frolic on Sunday, July 26th at 14:00. Each player will play five matches of 5 games each, with each match being a fun variant of tennis.
The first match is Soft and Short, which is played with an under-arm serve and the ball must bounce before being hit (i.e. no smashes or volleys).
Next is Hold Tight, in which one player has a rope tied around his or her waist and the partner holds the other end of the rope. The point is lost if the rope is let go.
The third match is After You Claude, which is played in half the court with the players playing alternate shots, as in table tennis.
The penultimate match is One Serve. In this game there are no second serves, but if a serve is unreturned you get two points.
The final game is Pop and Out, which has every player fastening a balloon to the centre of his or her racket. If popped, the remaining games go to the opposition.
To celebrate Wimbledon, June's Sunday afternoon event will be an American style doubles tournament. Players will play best-of-three games with different partners, with the top two men and women playing in the final. Players should wear all whites and will be served strawberries and cream at the end. Play starts at 2.00 p.m. on June 14th. Entry is ?3.50; please bring something for tea as well. Rosebanks are holding a racket demontration on Saturday", 30th of May. They will be using a ball machine on court 4 from 10am until 1pm and will have a wide variety of Wilson, Babolat, Prince and Yonex rackets for you to try. 15 minute slots can be booked to try out different rackets against the ball machine. Book your slot on the notice board in the club house. Those playing in the morning may also borrow a racket while playing a set if they're interested. Clothing and footwear are also available.
The Basford Cup starts the new season of Sunday afternoon events on April 26th. Members are randomly split into two teams, one captained by the men's team captain and the other by the ladies' team captain. A series of timed doubled matches are played with each team captain arranging the playing order, similar to the Ryder Cup. When the time runs out, whoever was in the lead at that point claims a point for their team. If the game score is even, each team earns half a point. Play starts at 2.00 p.m.

The main event of the club's 125 year anniversary celebrations is an exhibition match between the club and the Royal Air Force Tennis Team to be held on Sunday 28th September.
The club will be holding a garden party on Sunday 31st August with brass band, club history book launch, wooden racquet tournament, buffet and bar. This is part of the club's 125 year anniversary celebrations.
The Basford Mixed Open will be held on Sunday, 29th June 2008. Perfect for a day off from watching Wimbledon.
