Honour for Basford

LOCAL mayors may find themselves opposing each other across a tennis net on Saturday night.

The Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent, Doug Brown and the Manor of Newcastle, Tom Bethell, have both been invited to attend the official opening of Basford Tennis Club's resurfaced courts and improved floodlighting system.

The ceremony will be performed by Mr. Bethell, while Mr. Brown, a winter member of the club, plans to take along his gear in case he fancies a knock.

Improvements at Basford have cost in the region of £14,000. After several years' wear and tear the four hard courts have been chipped off and replaced with a new grey and green playing surface, while the strength of the lights which serve two of them has been boosted.

Floodlit tennis results in a winter membership boom for Basford, who attract players from other clubs who do not have the same facilities.
