The newly-surfaced courts and floodlighting at Basford Lawn Tennis Club were opened by the Mayor of Newcastle (Mr. Tom Bethell), assisted by the Lord Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent (Mr. Doug Brown), who is a member of the club. Looking on are the Lady Mayoress (Mrs. Brown), the Mayoress of Newcastle (Mrs. Pam Carter) and Mr. Derek Newport, chairman of the club's management committee.
