Success of Season's Working

The Basford Tennis Club has experienced a most successful season's working, particularly in respect to the junior members, who have more than doubled their numbers, there being 28, in addition to 84 playing and 73 non-playing adult members.

The various club competitions attracted good entries and there are now five silver championship cups in the club's possession.

The Wenger Men's Open Singles Cup was won by A. E. Walker, who beat the holder A. J. Lewis, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. The surprise of the season however was in the competition for the Wenger Ladies' Open Singles Cup won by Mrs. C. J. Noke, who defeated Mrs. A. D. Munro 6-2, 6-1. Mrs. Noke's real achievement was in the semi-final, in which she beat Miss Denise Huntbach, the holder 7-5, 8-6.

The A. H. Bladen Ladies Singles Handicap Cup was won by Miss M. E. Jones (plus 3/6), who beat Miss D. G. Hawley (owe 3/6) 6-4, 2-6, 8-6, after having been down 5-1 in the final set. The mixed doubles handicap for the Shirley and Heatley Cups was won by A. J. Lewis and Miss D. G. Hawley (owe 30), who beat A. H. Jackson and Miss M. E. Jones (owe 2/6), 1-6, 8-6, 6-3. The women's doubles handicap was won by Miss Denise Huntbach and Miss M. E. Wenger (owe 30), who beat Miss M. E. Jones and Miss Ruth Allerton (owe 2/6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

INTER-CLUB-COMPETITIONS

Among other features of the season may be mentioned the winning of the Staffordshire junior doubles by Mrs. C. J. Noke and Mrs. A. D. Munro. In the final of the Alsop Cup Inter-Club Competition, the Basford men's team were beaten by Walsall and the women's team lost to Wolverhampton in the final of the Ladies' Inter-Club Competition. In the men's and mixed matches, the club had a very good season, winning 10 matches and losing only three with one match drawn. The ladies won six matches and lost four.

The club possesses a strong management committee, with Mr. P. T. N. Forester as Chairman, Mr. F. L. Wilkes as Hon. Secretary, and Mr. N. F. Gibbons as Hon. Treasurer, while Miss Joyce Hopwood is Secretary of the Refreshments Committee.

At the close of the tennis season, the club-house is occupied by a bridge club, run by the club, with Mr. S. W. Orme as Secretary, and the this club no possesses a membership of 80.
