BASFORD LAWN TENNIS CLUB BALL

A ball promoted by the Basford Lawn Tennis Club was held on Friday night in the Municipal Hall, Newcastle. It was one of the most successful the club has yet held. Close upon 200 were present. The decorations for the Yeomanry ball on the previous night it had been arranged should remain for this occasion also. The ballroom presented a fine spectacle, with flags and streamers thrown across the room, the richly-draped walls, and the magnificent floral decorations. The platform, where Mr. G. Shirley's band discoursed delightful music, looked especially fine with its charming grouping of lovely plants and flowers. It was due to Mr. H. V. Boothby that the floral decorations, all of which came from Keele Hall, had been allowed to remain from the previous night. Dancing commenced about 8 30, and continued until 2 30 this morning. The M.C. was Mr. Herbert T. Heatley. Mr. Heatley also performed the secretarial duties, and much of the splendid success of the dance was due to his most energetic efforts, which extended over several weeks. The stewards, who carried out their duties in an efficient manner were: Messrs. A. H. Best, J. Broadhurst, A. P. Ford, A. F. Ford, N. Gibbons, J. W. Shirley, A. D. S. Stocker, W. M. G. Stocker, J. H. Walmsley and A. H. C. Wenger. An excellent supper was served in the Council Chamber by Messrs. F. Swinnteron and Son, of Hanley.
