Alsop Cup

Basford and Pensnett in Inter-Club Event.

North Staffordshire and South Staffordshire tennis players were opposed at Stone this afternoon, when the final of the inter-club competition between Basford and Pensnett was played in glorious weather.

Basford are the present holders of the title, but Pensnett, a club about two miles from Dudley, were making their first appearance in the final.

Basford and Wolverhampton are the only clubs which have won this competition - the trophy for which was the Alsop Cup - since it was inaugurated in 1924, and the local players were expected to retain the championship in today's match, for none of the South county rivals have as yet played for their county, an honour which has been gained by both Walker and Lewis of the Basford team.

In a series of doubles matches the teams were:-

Basford.- A. E. Walker and H. Bennett; N. F. Gibbons and A. J. Lewis; C. J. Noke and F. L. Wilkes.

Pensnett.- J. B. Hickman and H. Parsons; H. Greenway and T. O. Morris; J. G. Higgs and J. P. Powell.

Basford regained the County Inter-Club Championship winning all the first five rubbers.
