Basford octogenarians prepare for tennis grudge match

OCTOGENARIAN tennis foes John Plumb and Derek Newport are ready to lock horns in a grudge match this morning.

The pals have played together nearly every Saturday for the past 25 years at Basford Lawn Tennis Club but organised what they thought would be a one-off formal match when they were both 75.

John, aged 81, from Basford, won on that occasion and Derek has waited until now for his chance to finally get his hands on the trophy.

John's daughter Anne-Marie Hasson-Plumb, aged 44, from Basford, said: "They have to use adapted rules but we can bet they will be out come rain, hail or shine.

"We've even heard Derek has had a few sneaky lessons to make sure he's ready."
