NOTED PLAYERS TO VISIT BASFORD

THE season is not very old before we are provided with shocks and the defeat of Miss Dorothy Round at Bournemouth by a player ranked very much below her, is a surprise of the first magnitude.

Curiously enough, I do not think this result was entirely unexpected for Miss Round had not shown very convincing form in the earlier rounds. In fact, she had only scraped home by the narrowest of margins in two previous matches, and it was patent that she has not yet found her true form.

It is unfortunate that is it not yet possible to give names of the famous players who will be appearing at Basford a week to-day. Arrangements had been made for Senorita Lizana to be one of those taking part, but I am sorry to say, that she has been obliged to cry off at the last moment.

The two players who are definitely coming are Malfroy and Stedman, the New Zealand Davis Cup players, and it is practically certain that they will be accompanied by Pat Hughes, a member of the British Davis Cup team. Another player is being asked to partner Hughes in a men's double. In addition, two well known lady players will be taking part, but I am not able to say definitely at the moment who they will be.

It will be understood that it is no easy matter to arrange exhibitions of this sort because players take part in so many tournaments during the summer that they are rather loth to add to their engagements. However, I am able to say that the exhibition will be one to please all who see it, and it will provide local people with an opportunity of seeing really first-class players in action.

The Staffordshire Lawn Tennis Association has decided that members of affiliated clubs are to be given special privilege in the matter of admission prices and tickets will be available from club secretaries at 2s. Tickets for the general public are priced at 2s. 6d. if purchased before the day, while payment at the gate will be 3s. The exhibition is in aid of three hospitals - the North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary, the Stafford General Hospital; and the Royal Victoria Hospital, Wolverhampton.

Tickets for the Centre Court at Wimbledon are now available for members of clubs affiliated to the Staffordshire L.T.A. at prices ranging from 3s. 6d. on the first two days to 12s. 6d. on the final day. Applications should be made to Mr. A. C. Swann, Assistant Secretary of the Staffordshire L.T.A., Kebroyd, Sneyd-avenue, Newcastle.
