THE BASFORD CLUB

Mr. N. F. Gibbons

The Basford Club have a comprehensive list of friendly matches, and, in addition, they have the county inter-club competition fixtures. Basford won the Alsop Cup last year in this competition. The membership consists of over 100 playing members, 60 non-playing members and some twenty juniors (boys and girls who are still at school). Members who have obtained their county colours are Mrs. Heatley, Mr. A. P. Ford and Mr. H. F. Steele. Mrs. Heatley and Mr. Ford have also played for Cheshire. Formed in 1884, the club was made into a limited liability company in 1926. Mr. H. T. Heatley, the President was the first Treasurer of the club, maintaining the position until 1926. He was also Hon. Secretary of the old club for 31 years. Mr. J. W. Shirley is the Vice-President. The club situate in West-avenue, Basford, has four hard courts laid down by Messrs. W. H. Glaze and Sons Ltd., of Kingston-on-Thames, the material; being provided by Mr. C. E. Ramsden, of Fenton. The total amount in the formation of the new club was £2,5000. Mr. N. F. Gibbons is the popular and enthusiastic men's captain and Hon. Secretary, Mr. C. C. Gibbons (his brother) being Hon. Treasurer, Mr. T. L. Wenger is the men's vice-captain, Mr. F. L. Wilkes, the men's match secretary, Miss K. Whitfield, the ladies captain; Mrs. C. J. Noke, the ladies vice-captain; and Miss O. M. Gibbons, the ladies' match secretary. The members of the Management Committee are: Mr. J. Bell (Chairman), Mr. T. L. Wenger (Vice-Chairman), Miss E. M. Bladen, Mr. P. T. N. Forester, Mr. H. T. Heatley, Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Noke, Miss M. Shirley, Mr. J. W. Shirley and Mr. L. Timmis.
