Basford Tennis Exhibition

One of the ** tennis events in North Staffordshire since the ** began was the exhibition at the Basford Tennis Club ** Saturday, in aid of the North Staffordshire Prisoners of War Comforts Fund.

The exhibition arranged by the Ashbrook Sports Club with the co-operation of the Basford Club was given by Flight Lieutenant Wittman, the Polish Davis Cup player. Mrs. Pritchard (formerly Miss Denise Huntbach), the Welsh International; Miss Mary Norman, the Staffordshire County player; Flying Officer J. A. Moore, Stone and Staffordshire and Mr. B. Bentley and Mr. J. B. Haden of Trentham.

Although a lack of match practice was obvious, some fine tennis was played and the crowd of about 500 thoroughly enjoyed the matches. The effort will raise about £**.

In the singles matches, Mrs. Pritchard defeated Miss Norman by 6-3, 6-3 and Wittman beat Moore by ** 6-1.

In the doubles matches, Wittman and Miss Norman won the first set 6-2 and Moore and Mrs. Pritchard won the second at 6-1. Wittman and Haden beat Moore and Bentley by 6-0, 6-2.

Mr. F. L. Wilkes, President of the Basford Tennis Club was the umpire.
