Basford Women's Clean Sweep

TENNIS by Jackie Thorley

FAB FOUR: Basford women's team won the City and Suburban Foundation Trophy for the second year in a row after defeating Abbey View. The Basford team are (from left): Mary Hobson, Judy Tierney, Pam Smith and Karen Dobson.

BASFORD women made a clean sweep of the City and Suburban silverware by adding the Foundation Cup to their league title. In a repeat of last season's final, the league champions and cup holders took on Abbey View at Draycott, intent on retaining the double. Basford's Karen Dobson and Judy Tierney got off to an impressive start, defeating Sue Langford and Janet Hardern 6-3, 6-0, before notching up a 6-3, 6-4 win against leading Abbey View pair Liz Rowley and Rachel Finney. Meanwhile, Mary Hobson and Pam Smith were also in winning form as they recorded a 6-4, 6-3 triumph against Langford and Hardern. The players were one-set all against Rowley and Finney, but the final set was not played as it was raining heavily and Basford had romped to an unassailable lead.
