Basford double dreams on hold

Basford are keeping their fingers crossed for a City and Suburban League double.

After the men clinched the top flight title, the women's team are now aiming to complete a triumphant season. But their fate is in the hands of rivals Florence.

Basford beat 3-1 at Abbey View to put the Leek club out of the running for the Women's Division title. Now Basford await the Florence result at lowly Knypersley in the final night of the season before the championship is decided.

Florence, without a trophy this season need a maximum 4-0 victory to clinch the title. A 3½-½ victory would mean a championship play-off, between Basford and Florence, anything less would leave Basford as champions.

In the vital clash at Abbey View Basford were thwarted for the point that would have decided the title by home pair Kim Tattor/Louise Jones, who halved rubbers with Barbara Amos/Clare Savatovich 6-2, 4-6 and Hilary Adams/Nerys Egerton 1-6, 6-1.
