After many years without playing men's county tennis, the club put together a new men's county team for 2018, primarily targeted at members who were not playing in the City and Suburban league teams. Captained by Robbie Fricker, most matches were played by members who had not played in any of the other teams. A little assistance was given by players from the C&S teams in crucial matches towards the end of the season, once it became apparent that we could gain promotion to the next division. The final points tally put Basford third in the division, but as the second team amassed a number of penalty points, Basford finished second overall and will be promoted to Staffordshire Division 2 North next season. We hope to enter another team in division 3 next season, giving us two men's county teams.

There was some confusion about whether a substitute could be fielded, with most people thinking that the other team should be awarded a walkover of the rubbers involving the injured player.
