Basford 125th Anniversary

TENNIS by Jackie Thorley

AN exhibition match between the former World and three-times Wimbledon champion Fred Perry and his Davis Cup partner, Henry 'Bunny' Austin, is the highlight of a newly-published commemorative booklet about Basford Tennis Club. The club is marking its 125th anniversary with the publication of a 32-page pamphlet charting Basford's history, with special focus on a visit by the stars in 1936. Club stalwart Derek Newport – who has been a member for 30 years – has spent the past eight months putting it together, after gathering information and photographs from library archives and former members. “It has been a wonderful voyage through the history of the club,” said Newport. “To see these names and photographs coming forward has been absolutely fantastic and well worth the effort.” The club plans to hold two major events, including a celebratory day for members and friends, and a special exhibition match later this year involving men's and women's teams from the RAF.
